With two locations, overlooking the vero beach boardwalk and directly across from Indian River Memorial Hospital in the Perkins Medical Plaza, the Red Onion is a casual gourmet sandwich shop right here in Vero Beach. They offer a very creative gourmet sandwiches made with ingredients that are a step above what you would typically expect in a sandwich shop — portobello mushrooms, asparagus, fresh mozzarella, rosemary mayonnaise and of course red onions.
Try favorites like the house specialty “the Red Onion” or maybe the bruchetta sandwich, grilled crusty bread filled with tomato, buffalo mozzarella and basil with balsamic. The roast beef sandwich is livened up with thin sliced red onion, fresh spinach and rosemary-flavored mayonnaise. Many excellent choices fill the menu so put it on your list to visit often and don’t miss their home made potato chips served with malt vinegar, very tasty!
It’s so refreshing to have a casual sandwich shop that offers creative choices using gourmet ingredients not typically found in this genre. So if your looking for a casual spot and excellent sandwiches, try the Red Onion. Highly recommended!

My husband and I went for lunch today. We arrived at 11:15 a.m. and from the moment we walked through the door we had to listen to the girl at the counter complain very loudly to her co-workers about all the rude, annoying customers she had been forced to serve over the last few days. Despite being the only customers in the restaurant we had to wait over 30 minutes for a crab roll and a roast beef sandwich. There was an issue with the food but we could not manage to interrupt the counter helps conversation for assistance. In fairness, I’ll address that issue in a personal letter to the manager. We would not go back to this restaurant.
These reviews are very important. I was planning on taking my wife for a birthday lunch there tomorrow but I have experienced that same exact thing in other places and can’t risk having a lousy time.
The complaint in Tamera’s post is concerning but it seems that this can happen most anywhere. I have eaten at the Red Onion many times and, while this is a “counter service” type of place, I have had friendly experiences with the staff. My point is that this is not the norm… at least at the Ocean Drive location.
I live in Asheville,N.C.,each time I visit Vero beach I have to stop at the Red Onion,the food is wonderful and the service is great,very friendly.Wish we had the red onion in Asheville.
I can’t even count the number of times we’ve been to the Vero Beach Red Onion - we’ve never had issues with the food or the help. Any guests who have come to visit and eaten there always request it on their return trip. I personally love their signature sandwich, the Red Onion, but another favorite is their Grouper Reuben. Yummy. Neither my husband or I ever eat our entire meal - we always get two meals out of it.
I have eaten at both Red Onions on several occasions and have enjoyed each and every meal. The combinations on the sandwiches add a twist and create great tasting sandwiches! The staff has always been extremely courteous and helpful even during the busy lunch hour. I cannot disagree further from the first review,please do not let it disuade you from a great eatery!!!
As a “snowbird” for many years and looking to become a resident of the area; the Red Onion is the 1st thing on our agenda upon our arrival from MD. A great place for lunch. The portion is generous so my husband and I usually split the Grouper Sandwich. And, I always get extra containers of coleslaw to go. The inside dining area is small and limited outside seating at the Ocean Drive location- but get it to go and grab a bench by the sea. We rarely eat out, however we love the Red Onion and on our next visit I’m trying the Bruschetta in lieu of our all time “Grouper” fav.
Red Onion is one of my favorite places to eat. The brownies are amazing. I have never had a bad meal at either Red Onion. It is a casual place with great food. You can’t beat it.
Every time I am in Vero I make it a point to eat here. Never disappointed. Great food! The Crunchy Grouper Reuben is a must!! Will definitely be back again and again. And again….
I work across the street and I discovered the Red Onion after hearing wonderful comments about it. I started out with getting the Grouper Rueben and never had better! I then tried the Red Onion sandwich and was hooked on that one for awhile. There fresh homemade chips are delish. Also, the staff is nothing but wonderful!
This is on my list of MUST DO when visiting Vero. If you’re a foodie like me, you’ll happily scarf up their offerings, despite the longer wait for food preparation. It takes longer because everything is made to order and fresh! In a town like Vero where cooked/salted/frozen/shipped/reheated/salted seems to be a chef’s main job… I’ll take the Red Onion any day! Where are other delish places like this one???
i always find it very interesting and informative to read other reviews. we visited the ocean drive location and found the food very “original”, well-prepared and friendly, helpful service staff. the caesar salad was average, but the chrispy grouper rueben was excellent. my group also had the asparagus sandwich, the red onion sandwich and the portabella sandwich-all were more than satisfied with their selections.
