O.K. to very good:
Enjoyed my last dinner at the Undertow. I have been several times with varied experiences.
Dinner has been just O.K. at times to very, VERY good. I especially like that they have a nice selection of micro-brews and imported beer. The wine list is small but there are nice choices here as well. Lunch is also worth a trip.
I have had the same experience as the previous review. I have only been there for lunch (twice), and the crabcake was outstanding (!), but the next visit was just okay…had the tuna, and though I love rare/raw tuna, it was cold in the middle–fine for sashimi, but it was supposed to be seared/encrusted in sesame seeds. The flavors were good for the dish. The “slaw” was really good, as well. The value is very good, too. I will certainly go back, and will try it for dinner soon! The service was a bit slow at lunch, but, again, not so much as to prevent a return visit. Just make sure to have enough time during the lunch hour…..
The menu is so different then the other places in town…and some might not like the slow service but our group loves to sit back and take their time, enjoy the atmosphere and not feel rushed. Bravo to the owner/chef.
I went to the Undertow Saturday night and had a great time. Good band, great group of people, nice ambience. Service was a little slow but acceptable as it was busy. I ordered the scallop special and my wife a chicken pasta dish as they were out of shrimp. The pasta dish was a bit generic and with only 3-4 morsels of chicken, disappointing. My scallops were VERY good. All five of them. Big plate, sprinkled with herbs for effect, and five, count them, five scallops. For $28 a piece of bread would have been nice. No soup, no salad, no veggie, nothing else. Not that I mind $28 for dinner, but $1 worth of a carbo and $2 worth of salad would have gone a long way towards making it a real dinner. It reminded me of the commercial where the couple gets served a shrimp and two asparagus spears, then go home to cook dinner. It’s a shame that the pretentiousness of the “dinner” conflicts so with the nice ambience of the place. I’ll go back for a drink but not to eat. The owner’s probably figure that I don’t “get it”. I like to think I can see the emperor is wearing no clothes.
